My name is Dr. Terry Wahls, and I have MS (multiple sclerosis). This is an autoimmune disease wherein the body’s own immune system attacks the central nervous system. No specific cause for MS has yet been identified, however contributing factors such as environment, viral, immune dysfunction, and genetic predisposition have been linked to the disease.
I was initially diagnosed with MS (relapsing-remitting type) in 2000 at The Cleveland Clinic. I was treated with different disease modifying medications to no avail. By 2003 my MS had transitioned to secondary progressive MS, which is the more severe type that responds poorly to treatment. I had many problems including difficulty with walking, poor balance, and poor coordination. I went from using a cane, or a ski pole to a scooter, and then to a tilt-recline wheelchair.
Over the three years that followed, I only became weaker.
